Tater Tot Casserole—Free of Gluten, Milk, Egg, Corn, Soy

What do you want most for dinner on a cold night after a long day?

I don’t know about you, but I want comfort food.

And I want it to be easy.

And delicious.

Tater Tot Casserole

So every now and then, I pull out an old index card with a handwritten recipe on it.

Something from days gone by.

That something…..the old tater tot casserole.

Who doesn’t love tater tots!?!?!?!?

Thankfully, you can find allergy free tater tots. I have found brand name and store brand tater tots to either have milk, gluten or corn in them. But, surprisingly, not at Aldi! That’s where I buy them. Edited to add: The ingredient list in the Aldi tater tots has changed and they now contain corn.  What a bummer, but a good reminder to always read labels.

To make this casserole, follow this tutorial for making your own cream of mushroom soup. It’s fast, easy and waaaayyyyy better than store bought.

But I digress….who doesn’t love a one dish meal? Well, actually I do know someone who doesn’t like casseroles…but that someone is a kid…they don’t know what they are missing!

Don’t like ground beef?  Want some other comfort food?  Why not try this Chicken Pot Pie?

  1. I almost always buy frozen potatoes at Aldi. Almost everything at Walmart and the other chain groceries either have gluten or were processed in a plant that also processes wheat containing foods. The best part about Aldi? The prices are so much lower than name brands like Ore Ida
which are also safe, but cost more than twice as much. This casserole is one I made frequently when the kids were young, and they would inhale it. Even when my boys were in college, they would inhale this casserole! The hardest safe potato product to find gluten free has to be the hash brown patties. The only place I can find them are at Giant. Even the Aldi brand has the dreaded allergy warning lately.

  2. After searching for gluten, dairy, and corn-free tater tots, your recipe showed up. I was soooo excited to hear that Aldi’s carries a version that fits all of those requirements. However, the only ones at the Aldi I went to have corn in them. 🙁 Would you be willing to share the brand and name so I can see if maybe I just need to ask them to order them in for me? Thanks!

    1. I don’t have a bag on hand right now. But next time I go to Aldi, I’ll check it out. I’ll repost here, so keep an eye out.

    2. Well, this is a bummer. They must have changed their formulation. I looked at the potato puffs at Aldi when I was there a few days ago, and they are no longer corn free! A good reminder to always read labels as companies change their ingredient list. Argh!

      1. As you said, that’s a bummer. 🙁

I really appreciate you looking and getting back to me. I’ve continued searching, but so far, homemade is the only option. Doing them yourself is fairly time-intensive, but I may eventually want them enough to do it.

        Thanks again for looking!

  3. What brand if tator tots do you use? I haven’t found any that are both soy and corn free (I also can’t do dairy, soy, corn, or rice). Thanks!! I’m excited to try this recipe.

    1. Somehow missed the above post. I’m going to try it with shredded potatoes and dry them in oil before putting them on top…not sure how it’ll work but the recipe sounds too good to not try.

    2. At the time of this post I used tater tots from Aldi. However, since then they have changed the ingredient list and I have not bought tater tots in a very long time.

  4. Thanks for this, Soy Oil is potentially in Aldi Tots….the last time i looked. I am having issues with soy and trying to completely remove it from diet which is proving very difficult as many items state vegetable oil and list 3 different oils that could be in the item, and soy is one of them. I have also noticed that even though it is listed as a ‘may be’ it is NOT listed in the allergy section.

  5. Which brand of tater tots do not have soy. All brands I have found use soybean oil. Trying to find a soy alternative.

    1. I haven’t bought tater tots in years so I at this point I don’t know, but I imagine it is hard to find! Sorry I couldnt’ be more help.

  6. A quick note – just came across tater tots at Trader Joe’s. They are Gluten free, but I’m not sure about soy or corn. I’m thankful to only have to worry about Gluten. Thanks for this recipe! I will be making it tonight!
